Bu mimari anlayışın ürünü olarak sadece dini yapılarda dayanıklı taş malzeme kullanılmış, halkın oturduğu evler ahşaptan yapılmıştı. Doğal olarak çıkan yangınlarda İstanbul'un pek çok semti bir anda yanıp kül oluyordu. Yine de eski İstanbul'un mimari açıdan koruna- madığı yönündeki kanı, bu şehre karşı yapılmış bir haksızlıktır. Elinizdeki Eskimeyen İstanbul adlı eser de, bu tezi kanıtlar nitelikte bir çalışmadır. Eskimeyen İstanbul adlı kitap, hazırlayanlar için yorucu ama okuyanlar için keyif verici bir teknik ile basılmıştır. Bu sayede meraklılar İstanbul'daki pek çok camii, köşk, saray, türbe ve sokağın günümüzdeki durumunu, yüz yıl öncesi ile karşılaştırma fırsatı bula- caktır. İstanbul'a ve sakinlerine hizmetin yalnızca altyapı çalışmalarıyla ölçülemeyeceğinin farkındayız. Çağdaş olmak, bu şehrin hemşerilerinin kültürel ve sanatsal ihtiyaçlarını da karşılamayı gerektiriyor. Bu doğrultu- da, Eskimeyen İstanbul adlı kitabı sizlere takm ederken, eserin yayımlanmasında emeği geçen B mesai arkadaşlarıma teşekkürü borç bilirim. As a product of this architectural mentality, only the religious buildings were built of stones; and the houses were built of woods. As a conse- quence of this fact, many districts of the town were eas- ily burnt out in fires. i- u a u n p However it is not a fair notion to say that the ancient İstanbul could not be protected architecturally. Ageless İstanbul is a work that proves this thesis right. 1- r r This book has been published with a technique which is tiring for the preparation team; but enjoyable for the readers. So, people will have the opportunity to compare the situations of many mosques; pavilions; palaces; tombs; and streets with their previous conditions. K i We are aware that the service for İstanbul and its resi- dents are not evaluated only with infrastructure actions. Being civilized requires providing the cultural and artis- tic needs of the residents of this town.
